FHWA Highway Signage System

FHWA Highway Signage System (1956–1966)

Developed alongside the creation of the Interstate Highway System, the FHWA signage standards introduced uniform colors, iconography, and the now-famous Standard Alphabet typefaces. This foundational system revolutionized national wayfinding and remains one of the largest and most successful information-design projects ever undertaken by the federal government.
